Salinger's Whereabouts

The installation at NBMAA looks just like I hoped it would. Before the opening at the museum, Douglas Hyland and his charming wife Tita hosted a brunch. Nibbling on delicious treats and conversing with the Hylands' illustrious friends - about J.D. Salinger's current hide-out, among other things - we arrived at the opening a little late. This turned out to be a blessing because there were already a number of visitors there; I don't like the anxiety that usually comes about, wondering whether any guests will show up to an opening.

Here's what the show at NBMAA will look like. Seeing the images as one big cluster mounted around a corner gives the impression of a dense display of religious imagery. I remember these kinds of installations from old catholic churches in Southern Germany. They were donated by grateful patrons who overcame disease, famine, loss, or other miseries. The pictures were often painted or embroidered, they showed saints or other religious imagery.

Model Gallery

Sure, there's InDesign to create layouts of exhibitions - but it's great fun to build a model of the gallery that will host one's future exhibition --- and then install the show on foam core walls. This is the NEW/NOW space at the New Britain Museum of American Art. I wonder whether Douglas Hyland (director) would recognize it. Check back in about a week to see what it looks like with the art work up.

NEW/NOW

The New Britain Museum of American Art is announcing my show. It is part of their NEW/NOW series; they have recently shown works by photographers David Hilliard and Lalla Essaydi. UAMO festival

Hard to read but this is the flyer for the UAMO festival which is taking place in Munich, Germany, in the Kunstarkaden ("Ambulatories of Art"!), between April 3 and 6. Some of my images are in their art show. I wish I could be there, it sounds like a lot of fun and a great party.

Light Work Opening

Thanks to Hannah, Peggy, and John for taking a lot of pictures on my big day. The opening in the Light Work gallery was fantastic. Vern put together a video, and a lit sign outside the Robert Menschel Media Center informs people about the show. I was busy giving talks and a TV interview, and talking with guests who all seemed very interested in my photographs. Here are images of the installation, the talks, and the reception.

Light Work invitation

The Light Work Annual 2006

Once a year Light Work dedicates its publication Contact Sheet to receivers of Light Work residencies. The Light Work Annual 2006 contains my work with a wonderful essay by Ariel Shanberg. And, it includes Suzanne Opton's images of US soldiers returning from Iraq, with a statement by Larry List. Peggy Nolan's son Abner writes about his first-hand experience of his mom's photography, the essay is accompanied by five of Peggy's beautiful images.

Last week I was in Hollywood, FL, to visit my dear friend Peggy Nolan. She teaches photography at Florida International University; she let me use the darkroom and color processor. I owe her big for that. She also let me stay with her in her house filled with retro furniture, and with a big kitchen.

While I was there I gave a lecture at FIU about my work. The students I talked to were very interested in discussing their work with another artist. I suggested to Peggy to start an art residency program at FIU for visiting artists; the university has the facilities, and who wouldn't want to spend a couple of weeks in Florida?

Chris Whitley's last CD is about to come out. The front and back cover, and a photo of an old man sitting at Anhalter Bahnhof in Berlin are my images. I'm happy that Todd and Steven from Red Parlor label found them interesting, they are from a time when I lived in Berlin in the early 90s, running around photographing everything that caught my attention. Unfortunately, the little chocolate bunny in one of the images didn't make it, but Todd did a wonderful job designing the whole package; it looks very chocolate-y. Check out the CD in stores in about a month.

Kopeikin at AIPAD

Paul Kopeikin will show at AIPAD, some of my images will be on display in his booth #109. Show at the Deutsche Haus at NYU

The Deutsche Haus at NYU is showing some of my work in February. The opening reception will be on Saturday, February 4, from 6-8PM. The Deutsche Haus is located at 42 Washington Mews, it's one of the old cobblestone streets between Washington Square North and 8th Street. The show will be up from February 4 until March 5. I had artwork in three group shows in September and October. The exhibits in Woodstock and Hudson went very well; as a matter of fact, Paul Kopeikin liked the pieces from my Felsenfest series. He saw them at the Center for Photography at Woodstock, and now he will be showing images of the Menschenkunde series at Pulse Miami.

On October 22, I gave my very first photography workshop, at Light Work in Syracuse. FUN! I enjoyed it very much, it was a fantastic experience. My model, Trevor, had the look of a Botticelli painting, and my students for a day seemed to be sincerely interested in my photography. I started by showing them slides of my work and explaining the process, from forming an image in my mind to turning it into a photograph. Then we all moved to a sculpture studio on the SU campus. I wanted Trevor to look like a craftsman from the Renaissance, the sculpture studio served as the inspirational environment. I let each of the students take a polaroid of the final set-up with my sinar 4x5. I'd love the chance to give more workshops.
