NYFA supports "a priori"

the new york foundation for the arts accepted my proposal for a new photography project to their fiscal sponsorship program and granted it non-for-profit status. this means that donations to my project (titled "a priori") are tax deductible and nyfa 's stamp of approval will lend "a priori" greater credibility in the eyes of sponsors.

“a priori”, titled after Kant’s notion of valid knowledge independent of experience, focuses on the second and third generation of descendants of european jews. i intend to create portraits of members of this generation who were unaware of their jewish ancestry until later in life. i also want to record their stories, how and when they found out about their family heritage, whether it has affected their lives, and why it was kept a secret for years, even after the war. i envision the photographs and stories published together in a book.

Bridge Guard supports all artistic and scientific disciplines, with the main characteristic being "bridging" - intertwining disciplines, uniting opposites, exploring and moving boundaries in contexts - during a 3 to 6 month sojourn in the Bridge Guard residence.

Rya Conrad–Bradshaw, former Museum as Hub Manager at the New Museum in New York, where she organized commissions, exhibitions, public programs and residencies with international partner institutions. She also has experience working at Creative Time and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, among other arts organizations.

Put a Lid on it Already

My proposal for a collaborative project in Manila was accepted. Its title, "Put a Lid on it Already" hints at the threat that plastic lids, ending up in oceans, pose for marine life.

"Nothing to Declare is an International Contemporary Art Exhibition in Manila, Philippines from 25 October to 25 November 2011 with the possibility of traveling the exhibition to select countries in 2012 and 2013. Nothing to Declare will host a roster of international and local artists."

On April 25, my video traumraum revised will be shown as part of Women's Work, at Paul Kopeikin's gallery in West Hollywood. This collaboration with Ladies Lotto "illuminates aspects of the contemporary female experience".

Adopt-an-Artist

I am organizing a two-day residency at Dia:Beacon for my fellow students who are enrolled in the New Media MFA program at Transart Institute. It's scheduled for Sunday, February 28 and Monday, March 1, 2010, and 21 students have signed up. The artists are coming from New York, Los Angeles, Denver, Austin, Seattle, as well as Macedonia, Iceland, and Canada.

In the spirit of fostering creative interaction, I am hoping to arrange accommodations for the students hosted in Beacon homes. This could be a stimulating opportunity to interact with other artists and potentially get involved in projects emerging from the time spent at Dia.

If you live in Beacon, do you have the space and would you be willing to accommodate one or two artists for one or two nights on that weekend? Or, do you know somebody who would? Please pass on this request to friends and relatives.

Please contact me if you decide to adopt an artist for a couple of days. And, please, don't hesitate to forward this request to potential hosts.

BAU reunited

Beacon Artist Union is celebrating its 5th anniversary with a group show. Since I 'm considered one of BAU's original members, I was invited to submit a piece - I chose my video "waiting" from last summer's Berlin residency. The rocking chair usually serves as my clothes' purgatory in my bedroom.

Upcoming Show

My friend Beatrice Haverich, and I will be showing some of our photographs at the Museum Industriekultur in Nuremberg, Germany. The title is "Out of Sight, Always in Mind", referring to our hometown. We met when we were working in the same photo studio, some 20 years ago. Beatrice lives and works in Brighton, England.


This is the unofficial invitation - I will post the Museum's version soon. The show will run from July 2 to August 26, and the Vernissage is on July 1, at 7PM.

This year my snow report comes early, so I think we'll get a lot more of it this winter. Yesterday's blizzard dropped enough of the white stuff for a while, at least for my taste. Seems there's another storm coming through tomorrow... Winter Wonderlands are best viewed from behind a closed glass screen door, inside a warm place.

Nicki @ Like the Spice

Nicole Stager is showing her colorful photograms in a series called Synaesthesia at Like the Spice Gallery in Williamsburg. The opening was last Friday. The gallery is part of Williamsburg's Second Friday Art Walk. I know Nicole through transart institute, where we are both grad students. It was really nice to see her in NY after meeting her in Linz in July.

CPW Weekend Workshop

The Center for Photography at Woodstock invited me to give a 2-day workshop on portrait lighting. The participants work in various fields of photography, from teaching it to practicing it as fine art. I enjoyed the class, and from my students' feedback it seems that they did, too. Thanks to the CPW staff for all their help and support.

Citizen A

Last Friday I became a US citizen. My good old friend Seth came with me, he was impressed by how festive and pleasant the ceremony was. I'm now a citizen of two countries, which is cool.

The Baldur rules

Los Angeles looks wonderful through the lens of the Baldur.

My dad gave me a camera...

It's a Baldur, it was his first camera. Works like a camera obscura, has a single lens - it is a Zeiss lens, though - and takes 120 film. No focusing, no aperture, no time adjustments possible - point and shoot and hope the shutter opens. I love taking pictures with it.

Before I started my big adventure in Linz I stopped by my parents' house in Nuernberg for a couple of days. My mom made a traditional Bavarian dinner (Knoedel und Schweinsbraten) and almost the whole family was there - some only in pictures. Here are some pages I made about my first MFA summer residency at transart institute in Linz, Austria.

Salinger's Whereabouts

The installation at NBMAA looks just like I hoped it would. Before the opening at the museum, Douglas Hyland and his charming wife Tita hosted a brunch. Nibbling on delicious treats and conversing with the Hylands' illustrious friends - about J.D. Salinger's current hide-out, among other things - we arrived at the opening a little late. This turned out to be a blessing because there were already a number of visitors there; I don't like the anxiety that usually comes about, wondering whether any guests will show up to an opening.

Show Preview

Here's what the show at NBMAA will look like. Seeing the images as one big cluster mounted around a corner gives the impression of a dense display of religious imagery. I remember these kinds of installations from old catholic churches in Southern Germany. They were donated by grateful patrons who overcame disease, famine, loss, or other miseries. The pictures were often painted or embroidered, they showed saints or other religious imagery.

Model Gallery

Sure, there's InDesign to create layouts of exhibitions - but it's great fun to build a model of the gallery that will host one's future exhibition --- and then install the show on foam core walls. This is the NEW/NOW space at the New Britain Museum of American Art. I wonder whether Douglas Hyland (director) would recognize it. Check back in about a week to see what it looks like with the art work up.

The New Britain Museum of American Art is announcing my show. It is part of their NEW/NOW series; they have recently shown works by photographers David Hilliard and Lalla Essaydi. UAMO festival

Hard to read but this is the flyer for the UAMO festival which is taking place in Munich, Germany, in the Kunstarkaden ("Ambulatories of Art"!), between April 3 and 6. Some of my images are in their art show. I wish I could be there, it sounds like a lot of fun and a great party.
