Shows

I had artwork in three group shows in September and October. The exhibits in Woodstock and Hudson went very well; as a matter of fact, Paul Kopeikin liked the pieces from my Felsenfest series. He saw them at the Center for Photography at Woodstock, and now he will be showing images of the Menschenkunde series at Pulse Miami.

On October 22, I gave my very first photography workshop, at Light Work in Syracuse. FUN! I enjoyed it very much, it was a fantastic experience. My model, Trevor, had the look of a Botticelli painting, and my students for a day seemed to be sincerely interested in my photography. I started by showing them slides of my work and explaining the process, from forming an image in my mind to turning it into a photograph. Then we all moved to a sculpture studio on the SU campus. I wanted Trevor to look like a craftsman from the Renaissance, the sculpture studio served as the inspirational environment. I let each of the students take a polaroid of the final set-up with my sinar 4x5. I'd love the chance to give more workshops.

Award for Gallagher's Campaign

Darren Press from May Sky Inc. surprised me with the announcement that the campaign for Gallagher's Steak House in the NYTimes ("The Future of Business at Gallagher's Steak House") has won yet another award. And since I have been taking the photos of future business leaders of Manhattan for the campaign I also received an award certificate. It's from Communications Concepts, and it's the "Award for Publication Excellence", in the section Print Ads & Advertorials.

Woodstock's Acknowledgement

The Center for Photography at Woodstock has selected three of my images of the series "Felsenfest" to be in its exhibition and publication titled "Regional Triennial of the Photographic Arts". The show opens on September 3 and continues through October 23. The opening reception is on Saturday, September 10, from 5-7pm.

The Center demonstrates with this invitational show the photographic talent working in the greater Hudson Valley area. And I'm part of it...

Dutchess County Arts Council Fellowship

I've received the DCAC Fund Individual Artist Fellowship 2005-2006. This means that I will be working towards an exhibit as well as a lecture/performance at the end of the fellowship in June 2006. Here's a citation of what panelists said about my art: "...really terrific, beautiful, theatrical, intelligent, and accomplished body of work...a cohesive series of clear and memorable images."

Back Home

I came with 70 30x40" sheets of photo paper; now there's one unexposed sheet left.


I finished my art residency at Light Work in Syracuse yesterday. What an inspiring experience it was! My focus was on printing two of my series, "Menschenkunde" and "Felsenfest", as 30x40" c-prints, as well as print several images digitally. I had brought my camera and light equipment with me, and may be teaching a course in the fall on studio lighting at Light Work.

Light Work is part of the Syracuse University campus. I was able to photograph in one of the sculpture studios in the Comart Building, and borrow a costume from Syracuse Stage. The support from most people I approached to help out with models, props, or location was a pleasant experience.

Getting to know and working with Jeff, Hannah, Vernon, John, Mary Lee, and everybody else at Light Work was such a joy. I'm very happy that I got the opportunity to be Artist-in-Residence there for a month. And, while I was there I found out that I received the Dutchess County Arts Council Fellowship for Photography 2005.

There are now two large prints of mine in LW's permanent collection. Some of my work will be published next year, together with an article, in Contact Sheet, LW's publication. It's been a successful and tremendously stimulating month.


The artist apartment that is owned by Light Work is in an old elementary school building.

Artist-in-Residence....The first few days....

...have been challenging, encouraging, inspiring. I almost gave up on printing 30x40", I thought I couldn't physically do it. But sleeping over it, and trying again and again got me used to the large format. I got some very positive feedback yesterday about my martyr series.

Next week I'm planning to photograph St. Cecilia, and since she is the patron saint of musicians, there will be a band involved. The people who work at Light Work - Vernon, Hannah, John, Mary Lee - have been extremely helpful in all aspects, like introducing me to a band, organizing props, etc. I will be taking the photos of St. C. - the model's name is Sestina Cecilia Giordano (!) - in one of the sculpture studios.

I haven't really seen much of Syracuse other than parts of campus, Shifty's (a bar where the band was playing last night), and ---- a mall!

Unfortunately, I can't post any photos because I don't have the right software with me. After I return to Beacon....

Artist-in-Residence

On Monday, May 9, 2005, I'll be starting my month as Artist-in-Residence at Light Work in Syracuse, NY. It is a very competitive program, photographers like Cindy Sherman and Joel Sternfeld were there. I'm planning to finish photographing and printing the first part of "Felsenfest", my most recent series of photographs of Christian martyrs. I also want to work on a show that I'm having in October at Beacon Artist Union. Stay tuned.
