installation of the bottle lids "put a lid on it already"

statement: My installation “Put a Lid on It Already” suggests clusters of swaying, floating, artificially formed islands on an ocean surface by displaying small groups of colorful bottle and jar lids on a wall. Commonly, plastic bottle caps, found on every soda bottle, peanut butter jar, and cold cream jug, are dumped into streams and oceans, thus becoming a deadly threat to marine life. According to Greenpeace, seabirds and other animals swallow plastic caps instead of food. “It has been estimated that over a million seabirds and one hundred thousand marine mammals and sea turtles are killed each year by ingestion of plastics or entanglement.” [1] The formation of plastic lid clouds, comprised of bottle caps dangling from needles on walls, feigns a body of plastic waste wavering on the surface of ocean waters.

melon seeds

a few days ago i made a rosary with melon seeds for my dad. i wrote my brothers' and my name on each seed, back and front. while speaking to the washer/dryer repair guy the other day, i was absentmindedly moving around seeds that i had laid out on a newspaper to dry. one of those happy accidents, i guess....

NYFA supports "a priori"

the new york foundation for the arts accepted my proposal for a new photography project to their fiscal sponsorship program and granted it non-for-profit status. this means that donations to my project (titled "a priori") are tax deductible and nyfa 's stamp of approval will lend "a priori" greater credibility in the eyes of sponsors.

“a priori”, titled after Kant’s notion of valid knowledge independent of experience, focuses on the second and third generation of descendants of european jews. i intend to create portraits of members of this generation who were unaware of their jewish ancestry until later in life. i also want to record their stories, how and when they found out about their family heritage, whether it has affected their lives, and why it was kept a secret for years, even after the war. i envision the photographs and stories published together in a book.

Bridge Guard supports all artistic and scientific disciplines, with the main characteristic being "bridging" - intertwining disciplines, uniting opposites, exploring and moving boundaries in contexts - during a 3 to 6 month sojourn in the Bridge Guard residence.

Rya Conrad–Bradshaw, former Museum as Hub Manager at the New Museum in New York, where she organized commissions, exhibitions, public programs and residencies with international partner institutions. She also has experience working at Creative Time and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, among other arts organizations.

Angelika Rinnhofer, artist and participant in TransCultural Exchange’s Here, There and Everywhere: The Art of Collaboration project.

Put a Lid on it Already

My proposal for a collaborative project in Manila was accepted. Its title, "Put a Lid on it Already" hints at the threat that plastic lids, ending up in oceans, pose for marine life.

"Nothing to Declare is an International Contemporary Art Exhibition in Manila, Philippines from 25 October to 25 November 2011 with the possibility of traveling the exhibition to select countries in 2012 and 2013. Nothing to Declare will host a roster of international and local artists."

On April 25, my video traumraum revised will be shown as part of Women's Work, at Paul Kopeikin's gallery in West Hollywood. This collaboration with Ladies Lotto "illuminates aspects of the contemporary female experience".

Adopt-an-Artist

I am organizing a two-day residency at Dia:Beacon for my fellow students who are enrolled in the New Media MFA program at Transart Institute. It's scheduled for Sunday, February 28 and Monday, March 1, 2010, and 21 students have signed up. The artists are coming from New York, Los Angeles, Denver, Austin, Seattle, as well as Macedonia, Iceland, and Canada.

In the spirit of fostering creative interaction, I am hoping to arrange accommodations for the students hosted in Beacon homes. This could be a stimulating opportunity to interact with other artists and potentially get involved in projects emerging from the time spent at Dia.

If you live in Beacon, do you have the space and would you be willing to accommodate one or two artists for one or two nights on that weekend? Or, do you know somebody who would? Please pass on this request to friends and relatives.

Please contact me if you decide to adopt an artist for a couple of days. And, please, don't hesitate to forward this request to potential hosts.

BAU reunited

Beacon Artist Union is celebrating its 5th anniversary with a group show. Since I 'm considered one of BAU's original members, I was invited to submit a piece - I chose my video "waiting" from last summer's Berlin residency. The rocking chair usually serves as my clothes' purgatory in my bedroom.
